What is a Christian?

This is the one million pound question! There are loads of definitions of what it means to be a Christian. Many say it is ...

  • doing good things
  • treating others well
  • being a good citizen
  • going to church
  • being baptised

No one would argue that each of these things are good. But doing good things does not make one a Christian or help make one a Christian (Ephesians 2:8,9).

We need to get our understanding about what a Christian is from the Bible, not what tradition says or what we feel is right. I must warn you before carrying on that the following is an incredible story of love and truth ... that may make you uncomfortable. God created us to be in harmony with Him.

(Genesis 2:7-9)

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

However sin separated us from God.

Genesis 2:16-17

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil uyou shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” [Death means "separation".]

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Our sin must and will be judged.

God loved His creation. God, however, is also a just Judge. He said "the wages of sin is death". No one wants to consider the possibility of spending an eternity separated from God, family and all that is good in a place prepared for Satan and his demons. But this is our future.

Revelation 20:15

And anyone not found written in the Book of Life ewas cast into the lake of fire.

A Substitute is found.

Thankfully God's love for us is beyond what we are able to imagine. God Himself came in Jesus Christ to die on the cross over 2000 years ago as a substitute for us.

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 6:23

For ethe wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We can receive this great gift of God, forgiveness of sin and eternal life simply by asking in faith

Romans 10:9

... that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Prayer

If you are serious with God and would like to receive God's forgiveness through Christ I would invite you to pray something like the following ...

God, I realize I am a sinner. If I would die now, I would not be able to go to heaven but would be judged for my sin. I understand Jesus died for me and I now receive Him as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed this, please email me and let me know. Helping people understand about God is what we are all about!
